In Malaysia, the clitoria or blue pea flower is used as a natural food dye. It is known as bunga telang in the Malay language. Nowadays, it is also used to make shampoo.
The clitoria flowers are used as natural food dye and the blue colour looks really lovely in foods. However, the Chinese do not usually make kueh or cakes using blue. Because blue is not too auspicious a colour. Also try not to give a Chinese elder blue kueh. For them, you should give them cakes like angku that are red, which is the colour of auspice. There are only a few types of blue cakes made by the Chinese that I can think of but these are considered as Nyonya fare which is greatly influenced by Malay culture.
