SLEEPING IN A COFFIN TO RID BAD LUCK

Source of picture: Tungstar (from the movie "Linger")

Yes! You read right. I got this piece of news from the Star newspaper dated 5 September, 2008. It seems that a group of devotees in Johor Bahru, Malaysia took part in a 'coffin sleep-in' ritual recently. They believed that by doing so, they could get rid of bad luck. The devotees also hoped that by sleeping in the coffin, their families would be be blessed with prosperity and good fortune.
My mum and godmother told me that in olden days, this ritual was quite popular. There were also people who had bought their own coffins and kept them in their homes. My godmother said that if there was not enough space in the house, the coffin would be hoisted and hung up the ceiling. My mum said that sleeping in the coffin would actually make the 'final occupants' live longer. It seemed that my great grandparents who bought their final resting 'houses' while they were alive lived way past the age of 100.
In the case of Chinese actors/actresses who have to pretend to be dead and sleep in coffins, I think they are given a laisee or red packet (with money inside) for good luck after they have acted out the scene but I am not really certain. In the above picture, the coffin that the actor was sleeping in was actually upright instead of placed down on the ground. So the actor was actually standing instead of lying down on the coffin.
