My nephew, Kristofer, loves eating pomeloes. Every time he and his family come to Ipoh for a visit, I am sure to buy him pomeloes to take home to Singapore. Of course, he'd eat one of two the moment I give them to him.
When my sister and her children came recently (their dad was in Sabah on a business trip), I brought all of them to Tambun to buy the fruit. We also went to a pomelo orchard so that the children could see for themselves the fruit tree.
For the Chinese, the pomelo is considered an auspicious fruit and it is usually given as a gift during festivals.
Why is it auspicious? Simple! In Chinese the word for pomelo is called yòuzi (柚子) which is homophonous with that for "blessing," and thus the fruit is considered auspicious.
