IF YOU INDULGE, YOU BULGE

During festival time, we tend to eat lots of food and consume a lot of softdrinks. I am sure quite a number of you out there will find that when all is over you would've gained. Unfortunately, it is not anything that one would consider to be good. The gain would be in terms of body weight. Remember, "If you indulge, you bulge".
Let me share with you some information that I read in a newspaper article on Sunday. It is mentioned that in terms of sugar content, eating four Mandarin oranges is equivalent to eating a plate of rice. Even one orange has the sugar content equivalent to that of a slice of bread. Besides, too much of the stuff tends to make one cough. An endocrinologist and professor of medicine from Monash University said that the sugar from the mandarin oranges is easily absorbed and causes a huge spike in the glucose level. Diabetics have to be extra careful about consuming too much of this.
Dr Tee E Siong, the president of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, said that individuals can gain an average of 2 kg to 3 kg by over-indulging during the 15 day festival. he also advised that it would be healthier to chomp on smaller portions of food instead. The main problem, he said, is "gorging on the food".
Do you know that it is difficult to lose the weight gained especially the fat around the waist. Food that one should eat less are the fatty types such as the popular lap cheong, trotters, pork slices layered with fat or rich curries.
When it comes to alchohol, 100 ml of beer typically contains four grams of alcohol, which translates into 14 gmof sugar.
Dr Tee pointed out that another festive favourite that one should eat sparingly is the nian gau (kuih bakul) because of its high carbohydrate content and it is also very sweet. He advises everyone to be mindful of what you eat.
Remember, your health is your greatest wealth.
