‘Banknote’ plant a big hit as Chinese New Year draws near
GEORGE TOWN: A calla lily which many believe can help bring prosperity to its owner has become a hit for those celebrating Chinese New Year.
The flower, called ma piao bian chao piao (from lottery ticket to banknote), could draw in wealth to the family due to its many types of colours which represent the colours of different Malaysian banknotes, says nursery owner Tan Chaik Hong.
“The purple one resembles the RM100 note, the orange RM20 and the red RM10,” Tan, 50, said at his shop in Lorong Delima 5 here yesterday.
The other colours of the flower are yellow, pink as well as the two-toned white and pink, white and purple.
Tan, who has been running the nursery for 15 years, said the bulbs were from Holland.
“It’s suitable as an indoor plant and doesn’t require much sunlight, only some indirect sunlight in the morning. You also don’t have to water it daily, depending on where it is planted,” he said.
He said the plant, costing RM38 a pot, could flower all year long.
Although sales is slower this year, he believed the plant would bring good business for him.
Aside from the calla lily, Tan also has kumquat (lime tree), lucky bamboo, colourful pussy willows and bromeliad.
He explained that the supply from Cameron Highlands had decreased due to the recent floods as well as a reduction in foreign workers.
