Spending millions on a lucky phone number

THE rich in China are willing to spend up to five million renminbi (RM2.7mil) to buy an auspicious mobile phone number, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.

A search on online shopping website Taobao showed that a seller was selling the numbers “1898-8888888” and “1316-6666666” for five million and 2.86 million renminbi (RM1.54mil) respectively.

It is now a trend in China to spend lavishly on mobile phone numbers, and a search on the Internet for “beautiful numbers” or “auspicious numbers” will return those that contain “6” or “8” as the more sought-after ones.

> Still on the rich in China, Sin Chew Daily reported that a tuhao (a rich but unsophisticated person who spends irrationally) posted a listing on dating application “Wei Ju looking to hire a “girlfriend” for one million renminbi (RM547,000) a week.

He needs the “girlfriend” to accompany him back to his hometown for Chinese New Year. The report states that the name of the successful applicant would be announced tomorrow.

Apart from receiving a deposit of 200,000 renminbi (RM109,587), the “girlfriend” would also be flown to the millionaire’s hometown in his private jet.

The requirements are that the applicants be below 25 and sweet looking.

And if the successful applicant also has a doctorate or is a virgin, she will receive a 10% bonus.

The post attracted hot debate on the Internet. While many doubted that it was genuine, more than 5,000 women have applied.
