During Deepavali a string of mango leaves is one of the main decorative items used. These strings are tied at the top of the entrance doors of the houses; according to Hinduism, these leaves symbolize freshness, new life, rejuvenation, prosperity, the hope of a good harvest and an incident free year ahead. It is said that tying these mango leaves strings in the morning would bring them blessings and prosperity.
Legend has it that it was Kartikeya (Muruga or Skanda) who asked his devotees to tie green mango leaves on doorways. It is said that both Ganesh and Kartik are fond of Mango leaves.
