JOHOR BARU: Making elaborate kolams can take hours, so some of those celebrating Deepavali are taking a short cut.

They’re snapping up ready-made bejewelled kolams that not only look beautiful but also take less than a minute to lay out.

S. Krishnadevi, who has been in the business of selling Deepavali decorations for more than 21 years, said the products are attracting the attention of many shoppers this year.

“I brought in about three cartons of these bejewelled kolams from India and am only left with about five pieces now,” she said at her stall at the Deepavali Bazaar along Jalan Trus here, adding that due to the overwhelming response, she has ordered another batch of kolams.

While traditional kolams are painstakingly made from coloured rice or chalk, many younger customers like the imported items which place a modern spin on an age-old tradition.

The colourful stones in these modern kolams are pasted on small pieces of transparent plastic sheets and all a person has to do is arrange the pieces whichever way they want.

“The bejewelled kolams cost between RM45 and RM65 each, depending on the type of embellishments used,” she said.
