EAGLE SQUARE

Me with my colleague, Ustaz Fauzi and his family

Last weekend was the first time I set foot in Langkawi Island.  I had read about all the legends and wanted to visit the tourist attractions but unfortunately for me, the cable car ride and Mahsuri's tomb were under renovation.  Sigh!
Thankfully I got to visit Dataran Lang or Eagle Square.  Now this is THE landmark of the island. This square has a large 12-metre tall sculpture of an eagle poised to take flight.
Now people might be wondering what has the eagle got to do with this island of legends.  As a matter of fact, the name Langkawi is derived from the Malay words ‘helang’ (eagle) and ‘kawi' (reddish brown): hence lang-kawi.
