AN EXOTIC WILD FRUIT: TAMPOI

U

While I was driving to college in the morning, I spotted a roadside stall selling a fruit that I have never seen before.  However, I did not stop because I' d be late for work if I did so.
Instead I made a mental note to check out the fruit on my way back home after work.  The stall owner told me that the fruit was called Tampoi and he sourced it from Grik.  He told me that the fruit was sweet and charged RM8 for a kilo.  Since I wasn't sure whether I'd like it or not, I bought only 1/2 a kilo.
I did a check on the Internet and found that the scientific name for Buah Tampoi / Tampui (單貝果) is Baccaurea macrocarpa.  It is a small tropical rainforest fruit tree which is native to Southeast Asia.
It is dioecious, and the female trees bear fruit directly on the trunk and large branches. The fruit is large, orange-skinned, white-fleshed, with a delicious tangy flavour somewhat like mandarin (tangerine).
