NOW THIS IS WHAT TRUE LOVE IS ABOUT

Like most females, I am a sucker for love stories, especially those real life ones. One such incredible love story happened in Chongqing, China.  It began in the 1950s when a  19-year old villager Liu Guojiang fell in love with a widow, Xu Zhao Qing who was 10 years his senior.  At that time this kind of relationship was frowned upon but this did not bother them at all.  Nevertheless, the couple decided to live in an isolated place, a cave in Jiangjin County in Southern ChongQing area to avoid gossips.
Life was harsh in such a desolate place and to make matters there was no electricity and food was scarce. In fact, they had to eat grass in order to survive. Lui even made a kerosene lamp just to have light during night time.
As the days went by, Lui started to build a stairway using his own hands so that Xu would not find it hard to go up and down the mountain. In 2001, a group of adventurers discovered the hand-carved ladder and found that it was more than 6,000 steps!  As a matter of fact Liu Guojiang spent 50 years using more than 20 chisels to carve the stairway for his wife.  Wow!  People! This extraordinary gesture is testament of a man's monumental love for his wife.  The couple managed to raise 7 children with whatever they had and spent half a century living in the mountains.

In 2006, the crew of a production company that was filming the story of the Stairway of Love could not find a single moss on the stairway. They made the amazing discovery that Liu Guojiang cleaned up the moss daily so that his wife would not slip and fall while walking along the steps.
Unfortunately, in 2007, the 72-year old Liu collapsed after returning form work.  He was 72 at that time. Xu sat and prayed with her husband as he passed away in her arms.
Story has it that Liu was so in love with Xu that no one was able to release the grip he had on his wife’s hand even after he had passed away. The sudden death left his wife, Xu devastated and despondent. Due to her failing health, one of her sons relocated her from the mountains. She remained forlorn and passed away a few days later at the age of 87.
Xu Zhaoqing left a note before her death that she wanted to be buried next to her beloved husband, as she wished to continue walking hand in hand with her husband on their Stairway of Love in another world.  Aiyoh!  Soooo romantic ...

With the love birds gone, the Stairway of Love is now filled with moss.  Still this stands as a monument of the great love one man had for the woman  he loved.  Really, really touching!
