I bought some Piglet Cage Biscuits or Chu Chai Pang (猪笼餅) in Cantonese from the market this weekend. Each costs 80 sen. The Chinese characters on the basket say "Mid-Autumn". They are traditionally sold with moon cakes during the Mid Autumn Festival, mainly to attract the children. The biscuits are so called as they are shaped in the form of a roasted pig and the colourful baskets give one the notion that the pigs are trapped in rattan baskets.
Besides the Piglet biscuits, there are also the Mascot Moon Cakes or Kung Chai Pang (公仔饼). These Mascot Moon Cakes are a type of Chinese pastryand are made from flour and baked in moulds with animal shapes. They are golden brown in appearance and generally not coloured. The mascot moon cakes come in all shapes and sizes and usually have no fillings. Some of the shapes include the rabbit, fish, animals, Chinese mythical beings.
