MALACCA: An animal activist investigating why scores of domestic cats had been reported missing lately found an intriguing link of a love potion and used underwear to the felines' disappearance.
The Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) had earlier received reports that many cats in Malacca, including pedigrees, had gone missing from their owners' homes since September.
In a recent case, a 45-year-old woman in Padang Temu sought the SPCA's help after her Persian cat went missing.
SPCA Malacca chairman Vincent Low, accompanied by several members and Malacca Historical City Council publicity officer Tan Joek Kwang visited the owner, Christine, to get more details.
Over several days, bits and pieces of clues led Low to a house in the suburbs where he found an Indonesian woman living with a dozen cats.
“Only then did I learn that cats' fur and saliva are used in a ritual to make a love potion,” he said in an interview.
He said the woman claimed she was only sheltering the cats and had not abducted them.
The woman, however, later confessed that she soaked cats' saliva and fur into used undergarments to make the potion.
Low said the woman claimed her love potion helped to strengthen the bond between couples and functions as an anti-ageing potion, too.
Following his visit, Low took away four cats.
On Tuesday, he went there again to gather eight more cats but the woman had gone missing.
Low said there were cases of foreigners catching stray cats that ended up in cooking pots.
“This time around, the SPCA was shocked to learn that the animals went missing from the homes of owners,” he said.
Tan said he would ask the city council enforcement officers to keep a lookout for snares or traps at housing estates.Source: http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2012/5/17/nation/11296585&sec=nation
