THE LIMELIGHT IS ON THE MONKEY GOD

If you visit the Tua Pek Kong Temple in Pasir Panjang, you will be able to see stone figurines of characters from the story, "Journey to the West" which is about a monk and his disciples travelling to the west to seek holy scriptures from Buddha.  Many versions of the story has been made over the years and I have watched a few.  Previously, I had enjoyed the Hong Kong version starring Dicky Cheung as the Monkey God and thought that that was the best until I saw the 2011 version.  Now the special effects in this one is spectacular and the actors are very good.  In my opinion it will usually be the actor taking on the role of Sun Wu Kong, the Monkey God who will steal the limelight.  This holds true for the 2011 version as well.
Chinese actor Wu Yue takes on the role of Sun Wu Kong in the 2011 version of Journey to the West.
Sun Wu Kong 孙悟空 or the Monkey King is one of the characters in the novel Journey to the West.  It  is a fictionalised account of the legendary pilgrimage to India of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang who was accompanied by his three disciples Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing — together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's steed, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as an atonement for past sins.
