These ornamental pineapple plants are being sold as Chinese New Year plants. To the Chinese, they are auspicious. Why? Because they are called Wong Lai in Cantonese which sounds like Wealth is Coming. In the Hokkien dialect, it is called Ong Lai. So it is a prizes item all because its name sounds auspicious.
