Today is Tong Jie or the Winter Solstice. Traditionally, the Tong Jie or Winter Solstice Festival is also a time for the family to get together. This festival is one of the most important for the Chinese. One activity that occurs in Chinese families is the making and eating of Tong Yuen (湯圓) or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolize reunion.
Yesterday night, I bought pre-cooked Tong Yuen Dessert from the night market for my mum to use as an offering dish to the deities and the ancestors early this morning. She later ate a few of the rice balls. Me? No, I never like eating them.
This evening, we had a family get together at the Mar Poh Restaurant in Ipoh Garden. My brother-in-law Michael treated all of us to dinner to celebrate the coming of winter.
