TALES OF THE 24 EXEMPLARS: HUANG TING JIAN
Personally Scrubbing His Mother's Chamber-pot: Huang Ting Jian (A.D. 960)
Huang Tingjian was a well-known calligrapher, poet, and filial son who lived during the Song Dynasty.
He was a respectful and compliant man, especially in his filial regard for his mother who was very particular about cleanliness. It was hard to please the old lady, especially when it came to cleaning the chamber pot for stool. Although he was from a rich family with a houseful of servants, he insisted on performing cleaning the chamber pot himself. And so, every night he personally scrubbed and cleaned the chamber-pot his mother had used the previous day.
His reason for carrying out this chore himself was that since parents raise children to adulthood, sparing no efforts in accomplishing this difficult and often troublesome task, the children in turn, should personally see to the care of their parents. They should not rely on others to do the job.
