During Chinese New Year, my mum would usually get her special tray to fill with all sorts of New Year goodies. In Chinese we call this tray, Chuen Hup or Tray of togetherness. Traditionally, the trays are either octagon or circular in shape and usually has 8 compartments. Yeah! The Chinese have this thing for the number 8 as it denotes prosperity.
Nowadays, in Malaysia we have such trays being used to serve food to guests on festivals like Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and Deepavali. This goes to show that there is a blending of cultures in my beloved country. In the pictures above, you can see me holding a 6 compartment tray filled with different types of Raya cookies.
