My Malay friends are always tickled pink when I refer to Yellow Turmeric Rice as Nasi Kunyit. To them it is known as Pulut Kuning. Actually this is rice dish that transcends two cultures in Malaysia, the Peranakan Chinese and Malay. Nasi Kunyit is served during festivities such as weddings, birthdays and thanksgivings. Its accompaniments are either curry chicken or rendang.
The Chinese, especially, the Babas and Nyonas have incorporated it into the full moon celebration when a newborn baby reaches its first month. The parents will distribute Nasi Kunyit, chicken curry and red eggs to family and friends to announce the arrival of their new baby.
