THE VALIDITY OF SELECTING AUSPICIOUS DATES FROM THE TONG SING

I received an email from a visitor enquiring about the validity of the date selection process for a renovation.

THIS IS PART OF THE EMAIL I RECEIVED
What do you think of the selection of auspicious date(s) to commence renovation and so on? Do you think it is a must or an action merely to pacify our own fear or should I say curiosity? For example, a date to commence renovation may not be suitable for a person born under zodiac sign of rooster but might be good for say rabbit. What would then be if both of them are staying in the same house?

THIS IS WHAT I THINK
Well, I am a firm believer in the system that has been researched and developed by the elite Chinese think tank of the emperors waaay back before our time.  I know of cases where people who had not taken care to choose auspicious dates coming up with failure in their ventures.  So, it is definitely not an action to pacify our fears.

HERE IS THE EXPLANATION
The Importance of Date Selection
Qi changes over time.  Time is one of four major components in Feng Shui, the other three being land forms, buildings and people.  In my previous articles, I have frequently mentioned BaZi, or Chinese astrology, as the first step in determining what constitutes good Feng Shui for each individual.  After we have determined the person’s life path and checked out the Feng Shui, it is then important to select a good date to implement the remedies.
Selecting a good date to implement Feng Shui remedies, e.g., moving a bed or desk, can make the remedy more effective.  If the remedy was implemented in an inauspicious date, the effects will be reduced or even negated.
If you know something about Feng Shui, you may know that each year, there are certain sectors of your house that you should not have any renovation done.  That is because the Qi in those sectors is violent and should not be disturbed.  If these sectors are disturbed, residents may suffer illnesses and/or accidents.  However, there are certain dates within a year during which your house will be receiving such good Qi that disturbing such sectors will not result in negative consequences.  It is only a limited time within a year but a practitioner can help you determine when you may commence construction in such sectors.
Qi oscillates over time much like economic cycles, except with much more predictability.  The same pattern repeats once every 12 days or 28 days, depending on which system you use.  Some days are better than others.  Because we know the pattern in which Qi changes, we can therefore schedule our activities to fully utilize the type of Qi prevalent on a certain day.
If you are about to move into a new house, choosing an auspicious date to move in will minimize any problems such as movers damaging your furniture or not showing up on time.  But more importantly, the move-in date marks the beginning of your relationship with your new home.  Therefore it is important to select an auspicious date to maximize the beneficial Qi that you are going to receive from this new home.
There are several Date Selection systems widely practiced in Hong Kong and Taiwan.  The simplest way is to start with an individual’s BaZi chart.  We need to determine what type of energy is harmonious with the person in question.  At a minimum, we avoid dates with energy that is in conflict with the individual.  For example, if you were born in the year of the Dog, we would generally suggest that you avoid pursuing important activities on Dragon days.  We then look for days that are harmonious with the year and the month.  For example, 2007 is a Boar year, which is in harmony with the Rabbit and the Goat, but in conflict with the Snake.  So everyone should avoid selecting a Snake day for any major endeavors in the year 2007.  For the month of August, which is a Monkey month starting on August 8, we would also avoid Tiger days.  After ruling out the inauspicious dates, we then fine tune our selection by examining the energies for each day based on one of the Date Selection systems.
Date Selection can be used independently of Feng Shui.  Some days are best for initiating projects and starting new endeavors.  So if you happen to be a procrastinator, choosing such a date to start your projects will give some extra motivation to take it to the finish line.  Other days are better for negotiation and signing contracts, as they enhance the “fairness” of the discussions or agreements.  Unfortunately, there are days in which the energies are more disruptive and therefore best avoided for major endeavors.  It is recommended that before you pursue any important activities such as getting married, opening a business, signing an important contract or undergoing medical treatment, you check with a Feng Shui consultant who knows Date Selection for an appropriate date.
Last week, a popular TV news anchor and radio show host in the San Francisco Bay Area died unexpectedly of a heart attack during hip replacement surgery.  He underwent surgery on what we call a “Danger” day, which was a day not suitable for pursuing risky activities.  If he had scheduled his surgery one day later, it would have been on a “Success” day, which as the name suggests, was a day that increases the likelihood of a successful outcome of your endeavors.  On the other hand, Dick Cheney underwent a minor heart surgery to replace a defibrillator last Saturday, which was a “Stable” day – best for seeking medical treatment as it will produce long-lasting effects.  It appears that the procedure was successful with no complications.  So, do you think Dick Cheney knows something about date selection?
Date selection is simply one more tool we can use to tap into energies that are beneficial to us.  By initiating or pursuing important activities on a positive note, we increase the likelihood of a successful outcome.  In Feng Shui, selecting good dates for moving in, starting a remodeling project or implementing a remedy will allow us to fully tap into the positive energies of our environment at the most opportune time.
