I caught sight of the magnificent pearl white statue of Lord Buddha when I reached Taman Kemuncak in Ipoh Garden East where WAT Puthanimittam is located. The temple celebrated the consecration of this 10m-tall Buddha image recently.
The giant statue of Buddha is made of fibre glass and concrete. Construction work took two years to complete and a major part of the work was done by the monks. In the above pictures you can see the Buddha statue when it was under construction.
Flanking the steps leading up to the pedestal for Lord Buddha are a pair of dragons or nagas. The Chinese believe that dragons are beings of great power having the ability to protect the underworld and bestow fertility and wealth.
The temple will be organising some activities for Wesak which falls on 17 May this year.
The activities are as follows:
- there will be chanting of Paritta Suttas by the monks (10.30am),
- offering of food to monks (11.30am),
- a vegetarian lunch for devotees (noon),
- chanting of the Paritta Suttas by monks follow by circumambulation of the statue of Lord Buddha (8.30pm).
