Every year the cagers from my school will take part in the district level basketball tournament. And each year we will be trounced by the schools where there are a lot of Chinese students. My boys who are mainly Malays only started to play the game when they were in Form 4. Perhaps a handful who were from schools where basketball is popular would have played it since Form 1. They were playing against students who had been bouncing the ball in the court since they were in primary school. In my school, football is the most popular sport.
As expected, my boys only managed a score of 99 to 14 when they met the defending champions in their first match yesterday morning. Though we get such dismal results each year, we would still take part as to us the spirit of sportsmanship and participation is more important.
