The rambutans above which were being sold at a roadside stall along the highway from Lumut to Ipoh did not look to appealing to me initially. I had stopped at the stall to buy a coconut drink to quench my thirst and the man at the stall told me that the fruit was known as Rambutan Gula Batu or Rock Sugar Rambutan. He offered me one fruit and asked me to taste it. According to him, the fruit did not look good on the outside but really tasted great once the skin comes off.
I tasted the fruit and it did taste nice. The flesh came off easily from the seed and did not stick to it. In Malay this is called lekang. I bought a bunch for RM5 to eat along the journey back to Ipoh.
