Many of you out there would experience graduation day maybe once or twice in your lives but to me this event is a yearly affair. The that I teach in is a vocational school and the students are 16 and 17 years of age which means they study in the school for a duration of two years. Most of the students are boarders and so spend most of their time in school.
Though the fifth formers only sit for their examination in November, their graduation ceremony, whereby they are presented with certificates stating that they had been students of the school, is held earlier together with the award presentation for academic results. The boys and girls would be attired in their best traditional costumes. Some of the boys can also opt to wear coats instead of the traditional attire.
It is a grand affair each year. A day before, we have the Aqiqah ceremony where a cow or two is sacrificed as a sort of thanksgiving and prayers will be conducted for our Form 5 students to perform well in their coming examinations. On the day itself, we will invite a VVIP to officiate at the ceremony. This year the silat students, the choir and the nasyid groups put up performances for the graduands, the award recipients and the guests. Parents of the students would also be invited. At the end of the ceremony, everyone involved would be treated to lunch.
