VUVUZELA

When I watched the opening match of the FIFA World Cup between South Africa and Mexico, I had thought that there were a lot of insects that had gotten into the stadium to make a buzzing sound.  It was only after a while that I realised that the sound came from the blowing of a type of horn by the fans there.  That particular horn is something that is peculiar to South African football and it is called Vuvuzela.

A vuvuzela (English pronunciation: /vuːvuːˈzeɪlə/) or a stadium horn, is a blowing horn approximately one meter in length. It is commonly blown by fans at football matches in South Africa.

To me the sound was rather irritating and I pity those who are unused to the sound if they are at the stadium.  They might get massive headaches or nasty ear aches.  However, pain to the ears or otherwise, the vuvuzela has become the symbol of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and like it or not we have to bear with the droning sound for the entire month.
