Whenever I come upon a herb or plant that is new to me, I would spend a lot of time learning about it. My latest fascination is the Paku Rawan or Paku Merawan. This vegetable contains relatively high levels of Ca, Fe and ß-carotene, which are minerals that are frequently insufficient in the diets of women in low-income countries. Not bad, it is nutritious for women. In Malaysia and Indonesia, it is often referred to as the poor man's vegetable.
I visited a paddy field yesterday and managed to see the paku rawan growing by the side of the waterway. However I did not pluck any to take home with me to Ipoh as this weekend I will be celebrating Mother's Day with my mum and aunt - so no cooking.
When I was at the Farmer's Market in Ipoh this morning, I saw this vegetable being sold at one of the stalls. A bunch is sold at a price of RM1. Cheap, eh?
Anyway, I went and bought the cooked Paku Rawan at a restaurant and had it for lunch. I wouldn't want to have cravings for it later on in the day. Anyway, I did buy two bunches from the market as I am thinking of making a dish from it when I go back to Sitiawan.
