TO GIVE OR NOT TO GIVE ALMS TO BEGGARS

If one goes to pray at many of the Buddhist and Taoist temples, one common sight would be the beggars waiting to receive alms from the worshippers who have offered their prayers.  There are some who prefer not to give alms to these beggars as they believe that many of those begging for money in the streets work for a syndicate or they are too lazy to work.
When I was at the temple this afternoon to pray to the White Tiger Deity, I gave my mum a handful of coins to give to the beggars who were sitting at the entrance ot the temple.  Well, my mum gave the money to all the old beggars but she gave me back a few coins because she refused to give the money to a young man who had also put out his hand.  She told me that he was so young and able-bodied, he could jolly well go and earn money.
Those who know how to calculate a person's fortune (what is called measurement of the weight of ones bones) would know that there are indeed some individuals who are fated to beg for a living.  No matter how hard they try, they would have to succumb to their fate.
So, we come to the question of to give or not to give ... what say you?
