CNY AUSPICIOUS FLOWERS: CHRYSANTHEMUMS
This weekend I ferried both my mum and aunt to the market, the department stores and to the nurseries so that they could get all the New Year goodies. Yesterday evening, we went to the "Fu, Lu and Sau Nursery" in Greentown, Ipoh as the two ladies wanted to buy some pots of chrysanthemums to decorate the house. Since the Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival, it is all the more important to have lots of plants and flowers around the house to signify growth and abundance. Furthermore, there is no Lup Chun or beginning of Spring for the Tiger Year since the first day of the new year starts only on 14th February. for your information, Lup Chun would always be either on the 4th or 5th of February each year.
Flowers represent new life and rebirth and in the Chinese language, the word for 'flower' sounds like the word for 'wealth' and so the Chinese believe that without flowers, there would be no formation of fruits, this would inadvertently have a not so good impact on the family's fortune for the year ahead.
One of the most popular flowers for the Lunar New Year is the chrysanthemum. This flower symbolizes perfection, optimism and joy and on a more spiritual level, longevity and meditation.
