When I drove into town with my mum and aunt this morning, I saw a number of devotees carrying kavadis near the Hindu temple area. It was indeed a colourful sight. The kavadis were beautifully decorated and many were adorned with peacock feathers. The photographs were taken by my mum as I was driving the car very slowly behind the kavadi bearers and their entourage.
The act of carrying the kavadi is often performed during the festival of Thaipusam and emphasizes debt bondage. The Kavadi itself is a physical burden through which the devotees implore for help from the God Murugan.
Generally, Hindus take a vow to offer a kavadi to idol for the purpose of tiding over or averting a great calamity.
