PICKLED FOOD AND AILMENTS

My late father loved eating pickled fruits (like the ones above) and would keep a stock of the stuff in the fridge. Every time he watches telly, he would be snacking on them. Actually he wasn't the only one having a love affair with pickles, millions of others in China share his passion.

I read a news article which reported that China accounts for about half of the global annual death toll from stomach cancer due to the Chinese taste for pickled and smoked food.

Like many females I too enjoy snacking on these preserved goodies but I control myself nowadays. You see my dad suffered from final stage renal failure and his doctor said that him eating so much of the pickled stuff could have contributed to his illness. The thought of him having to go for dialysis three times a week would be a deterrent for me to overindulge in the pickles.
