THE LIGHT OF WISDOM

In Buddhism, the lighting of the oil lamps signifies the light of wisdom overcoming the darkness of ignorance. Light from the lamps is significant for removing darkness, and symbolizes the transformation involved in the quest for enlightenment.
For the Taoists, believed to ward off bad luck and also to alleviate ones good fortune. The concept of light overcoming darkness prevails. That is why my mum and I have a fondness of lighting candles and oil lamps whenever we go to temples.
The empty glass jars above that are placed on a metallic structure will be filled with oil and wick and lit on the 14th day of the 10th lunar month. Visitors to the temple can make a payment for a lamp to be lit on that day. Besides the lighting of the lamps, prayers will also be said.
