To the Chinese, ones name can effect our lives. A person with a weak BaZi if given a strong name might not be able to live up to the name and instead of reaching great heights, the individual might become sickly. The choice of a Chinese name would very much depend on the 5 elements. If a person is lacking in water, then his/her name should contain the Chinese character for water to make up for the lack of it.
There is this British supermodel who goes by the name of Agyness Deyn who changed her name from Laura Hollins to further her modelling career. According to information I got from Wikipedia, Deyn's name was apparently coined after she consulted her mother's friend, a numerology expert who advised her of the most 'fortuitous' way to spell the name 'Agnes'. It seemed that both her mother Lorraine and sister Emily have both changed their surname to Deyn, while Lorraine has changed the I in her first name to Y. So I see that even the westerners do believe in that ones name has the power to effect our lives.
