DON'T SIT ON THE TABLE

The above picture was posed by my student. I had asked him to help me demonstrate that in many cultures it is not proper to sit on the table. According to my library assistant, Puan Asiah and a few of my students, sitting on the table is a show of disrespect as our food and books (especially religious books containing holy verses) are placed on the table.
Like the Malays, the Chinese also believe that sitting on the table is rude and a sign of disrespect. I have heard of elders reprimanding the younger ones when they sit on the table and the one warning given by them is that those who make a habit of sitting on tables will turn into morons. Actually, I think that this last bit was added as a deterrent for the young ones to not sit on the tables.
