MIAN GUI

In Hokkien, the tortoise flour bun is referred to as "Mian Gui". To the Chinese, the tortoise symbolises longevity and therefore the bun is made in the shape of this celestial being. This bun is one of the popular offerings during the 9-Emperor Gods Festival. A pink pair of normal sized ones cost RM2.oo. The yellow ones that I bought from the stall outside the Tow Boo Kong temple yesterday morning as offerings cost RM2.50. The tortoises had the auspicious words "peace and safety for the whole family" written on their backs. The larger ones pictured above would definitely cost a lot more. I forgot to ask the price and therefore cannot tell you how much they cost.
