CHAP GOH MEH - A NIGHT FOR ROMANCE

It is 11.00 p.m. now which means there is only an hour left of Chap Goh Meh or the 15th night of the Chinese New Year.  In Penang, this night is one for romance whereby single females throw mandarin oranges into the sea (with their contact numbers) with the hopes that they end up in the hands of some eligible males who would look them up.

Since I am neither married nor attached and am too busy preparing the documentation for the library to go and throw some mandarins, I have 'borrowed' some of Ramona's and Sakhee's photographs to post here.  Now here are two lovebirds for you.  I hope they don't charge me royalty for posting their photographs here.

By the way, I noticed that the two of them have that brother-sister type of look.  Now according to the Chinese, this is good for a couple as this is a sign that the union will be a successful one.

TEEN PRINCESS

The girl in the picture does look like a princess from one of the fairy tales, right?  Believe me, she is as beautiful in real life as she is in the pictures.  I should know because I know Ros Ramona Qadira Zamzam. I taught her for two years from 2006 to 2007 and in the process have gotten to be a friend of her family and so Mona is like a daughter to me.

At present she is studying at Segi College but at the same time is pursuing a career in acting.  For someone so young, she has managed to do quite a number of commercials (print and media) and has also acted in a sitcom, a few dramas and also a movie, "Dua Hati Satu Jiwa". I must admit that I had not watched it yet.  (Mona, if you are reading this don't get mad cos I haven't had time to watch Wu Chun's "14 Blades" either.)

Currently, Ramona is one of the 18 finalists in the Dewi Remaja Competition.  She is in contention to win the title of "Dewi Favourite".  So, do try and give her some support by voting for her via sms.

You need to send DEWI to 33333.  The charge for the sms is only 50 sen.

YUAN SIAO JIE 元宵節

Today is Yuan Siao Jie which is another name for the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.  In Hokkien, it is known as Chap Goh Meh.  It is also popularly known as Lantern Festival in China.

There are actually a few stories why this day is celebrated as the Lantern Festival.  One of the story goes like this ... A beautiful heavenly bird flew down a village and was killed. The Jade Emperor was very anger and wanted to burn down the entire village on the 15th lunar day. A clever man from the village advised every family to hang candle lanterns around the house, carry lanterns on the street, burn fire outside their houses and to burn firecrackers on that night. The Heavenly soldiers saw the village on fire from the heaven, and returned to their posts in heaven. The village survived and the festival lives on until today.

In China, rice dumplings tangyuan ( 汤圆) is eaten on this day. I think some families also eat it here in Malaysia as well.  Candles are lit outside houses as a way to guide wayward spirits home.

This fifteenth day  marks the end of the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities.  Then it is time for us people to start actualising all that was wished for or if that does not bear fruit, then to start the whole ritual again the following year.  Well, that is life!

A BIT LATE ...

During my consultation with Jason yesterday, he said that the Sword Star was present in my BaZi for this year and I would be susceptible to bloodshed, injuries and accidents.  He suggested that I go and see the dentist for some descaling work as this would involve some bleeding. He told me to do it as soon as possible to prevent anyone of the above mishaps happening.
Well, I told him that it was a bit too late as I had already fallen down from the stairs of the school stage.  I had to get the Chinese Sifu to set back my bone and also to massage my aching body.  That was a very painful experience.  Anyway, I will still go for the descaling as I don't want any further injury to my  poor old body.

ENOUGH WATER BUT LACKING IN FIRE

During my BaZi consultation with Jason, he told me that I had all the 5 elements in my chart but since Yin wood was strong, I had to be extra careful as I would be in a competitive situation until 2013.  I am still in a Full Yin ten year period.  Aw Shucks!!!
Since I have enough water in my chart, I do not really have to worry about having to make up for the lack of it for the year of the Tiger.  According to Jason's analysis, the fire element is not so strong and I need to give it a boost by wearing more reds.  Oh! Oh! All this while I have been thinking that I needed to wear blue. That was why immediately after the consultation I went and bought this red blouse from a store nearby to add to my wardrobe.  For sure, you will be seeing more pictures of me in all shades of RED this year.

COMPLIMENTARY BAZI READING

I finally managed to get Feng Shui Master Jason Eng to do a BaZi Reading for me at 4.30 p.m. yesterday at his Ipoh World of Feng Shui Branch.  He is indeed one very busy man.  As a matter of fact, he was fully booked from 11.00 a.m. this morning for the BaZi Reading which came as a complimentary gift for buying a ticket to attend his Feng Shui talk in January.
For your information, the charges for a verbal BaZi Reading is RM130.00 while a more detailed one with a written report is RM298.00.  Those who wish to have their BaZi read by Jason can telephone his assistant, Danny at WOFs Ipoh to make an appointment.  The contact number is 0165506618.

Let me fill you in on what is BaZi Reading.

Bazi Reading
  • It is sort of a DNA mapping into ones life.
  • It is also commonly known as Four Pillar fortune telling.
  • The Four Pillars consists of the year, month, day and time pillar.  Each pillar consists of two Chinese characters, thus giving eight characters (BaZi) in total.
  • The day pillar represents oneself.
  • The other pillars represent the world of a person in relation to him or her.
  •  In geomancy, the universe contains 5 elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) that react with each other in different ways.
  •  From the Four Pillars, a Feng Shui master will be able to tell the characteristics of a person, his/her personality, relationship with others and even the kinds of health problems.
  • Besides the Four Pillars, there are the luck pillars, which will tell the luck of a person for a ten year period.
MY BAZI READING FOR 2010
Surprisingly, the analysis given by Jason was quite similar to the prediction from the Tarot Card Reading by Ah Ku.  Both said that my luck would be better in the second half of the year.  Ah Ku said that my luck would become better the older I get.  Jason said that my luck for the next 10 year period which starts in 2014 would be better and I would be more focussed then and my perspectives become clearer and more defined.
When I asked Jason about the possibility of when my book would be published, he said 2011, as next year would be a good year for career advancement for me but he did say that it could also happen in July or November 2010.  I am keeping my fingers really crossed.
And YESSSS ... I have good Peach Blossom Luck in the year of the Tiger.  That means my relationship with people will be good.  I will have better networking.  Too bad I am not in sales.  However, if my book is published there is a possibility that many people will buy my book and then I can get to publish a second book that I have written about real ghost stories.  Heh! Heh!

BLESSING FROM HEAVENLY OFFICER ZI WEI

The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is also called San-Yuan (upper period of the year) Festival in Taoism. This day is the birthday of the Heavenly Officer who blesses human luck. There will be some Taoists who will have a prayer ceremony at home for this deity or go to a Taoist temple to pray for luck.

Below is the Double Dragon Heaven Seal that one can buy from a store selling Feng Shui items.  Some people would have their names carved on to the stamp to symbolically mean that they have the blessings from the Heavenly Officer.

The four Chinese characters (Tian Guan Ci Fu)on the seal literally means "blessing from heavenly officer", the word Tian Guan, "heavenly officer" or more specifically Heavenly Emperor Zi Wei (天官賜福紫微大帝) or the Great Zi Wei, whom Taoists believe to descend to the human world on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year to bless people who have done good deeds. On this day, the Heavenly Officer is believed to distribute good luck and blessings to those who have been nice.

FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED

My mum, aunt and I visited a famous tarot card reader in Ipoh this afternoon.  Actually, my aunt has been consulting her for nearly forty years and her predictions are rather accurate.  Furthermore, one needs to telephone in advance to make a booking.  Though I called in the morning and was told to go to her place a 1.30 p.m., my family and I had to wait until 2.45 p.m. before it was our turn.  There were a few others before us. Many people in Ipoh refer to her as Sek Lui (literally translated to mean Rock Lady) but we call her Ah Ku (Aunty).  Ah Ku is in her sixties and she is a spinster.  She only charges RM10.00 for a reading which lasts about 10 to 20 minutes.  Before she lays out the cards, she would pray to Buddha first and asks for His guidance.  Then one needs to tell her the Chinese age, date of birth and address and she then repeats the information and asks for Buddha's divine help before laying the tarot card spread to tell the fortune of the person.
I asked if I could take photographs of the session but she declined as she said that she was not looking her best and told me that I could do so next time I went there.
My mum and aunt had their readings first.  As far as I know, quite a number of Chinese of the Taoist and Buddhist faiths would visit the fortune tellers and tarot card readers at the beginning of a new year to have their fortunes read.  They would be advised on what to do if their Animal signs clash with Tai Sui or there are certain calamities or dangers ahead for them.  Sometimes, they would be told to pray to the White Tiger Deity, to appease the Heavenly Dog, to carry out a ritual to "beat the small people (troublemakers) or to pray to certain deities to ask for blessings.  In that way we would be prepared to counter any negativities that might be awaiting us for the year, as the saying goes "forewarned is forearmed" - POWER IS INFORMATION.

I am sure that you would be curious what were her readings for me, right?  According to Ah Ku, my luck for the year is okay.  She told me to be contented with what I have and that my book will definitely be published this year.  YEAH!!!

GETTING RID OF BAD LUCK BY FLUSHING IT DOWN THE TOILET

Believe it or not, there is a temple in Japan where people go to to flush away their bad luck?  Watch the video below and read the article below to find out more.

In the Mantokuji "divorce temple" of Ota City, Japan, visitors flush all of the bad karma from their lives down the toilet, literally.

Bad luck goes down the toilet at Japan temple rite

OTA CITY, Japan - Tired of an unsatisfying relationship, the sluggish economy or just your own bad habits? Now you really can flush it all down the toilet.

The Mantokuji temple in Japan's central Gumma prefecture was once an asylum for women who wanted to cut marital ties with their husbands, a function now made obsolete by modern divorce laws and family courts.

Now, the temple is a museum chronicling the history of divorce as well as a place to help people get rid of any bad karma, via a piece of paper they drop into latrines.

Visitors are given two options: the white squat toilet for the "enkiri", or cutting ties, or the black one for the "enmusubi", or tightening ties.

"I severed the bind with obesity" said 69-year-old, tea ceremony instructor Shizue Kurokawa, after flushing her "enkiri" tag in the white latrine.

"I'm getting fat and it's not healthy. From now on I'd like to lose weight, be in fine form and take care of my health."

According to temple officials, most visitors still come with the purpose of breaking up with their partners, but most do so very discreetly.

Those willing to talk to Reuters had less private wishes.

"I work for a business company and things are not going well. What's more, deflation is a problem everywhere in Japan," said 74-year-old Kiyo Suzuki, an employee at a steel production company. "So my prayer is that things may recover for all of us."

Up until the 19th century, Mantokuji was one of only two women-only convents serving as a refuge for wives who wanted to leave with their husbands.

Women in those days had no legal rights to ask for a divorce, though all a man had to do was to write "I hereby divorce thee" in a letter to make the breakup official.

Convent officials would act as mediators between the couple, and if a reconciliation was not possible, the officials made sure the wife had some sort of legal protection.

"In the past the Mantokuji was a divorce temple. There are only two in Japan and in the whole world," explained the temple museum director Tadashi Takagi.

"Originally it provided the possibility to break off with bad relationships. Women used to come here to have legal protection and divorce from their husbands. So the idea today is that people get rid of the bad things in their life and become happy."

Takagi said that with spirits and gods believed to inhabit practically everything in Japan, toilets are no different.

And among the million gods in the Japanese pantheon, the deity of the toilet, kawaya no kami, was considered just as important as the others since he was believed to heal illnesses and help in childbirth, Takagi added.

But ever since the symbolic latrines were installed, accidents have happened.

"When this museum was realized, at first, there were people who took it for a real loo and actually used it. But since we have put a sign indicating that the toilets are for praying, almost nobody makes that mistake anymore," Takagi said.

Despite its quirky rite, the Mantokuji sanctuary continues to stand as a testimony to women's rights in Japan. Once inside its gates, unhappy wives did see a change in their fortunes, without really having to flush it away.

EATING FISH FOR SURPLUS LUCK

The Chinese word for fish rhymes with their word for surplus. By eating half of a fish on New Year's Eve and saving the remainder for the next day, families can transfer their surplus luck to the New Year.

ELEVENTH DAY OF THE LUNAR NEW YEAR

My mum told me that the eleventh day of the Chinese Lunar New Year is a time for inviting in-laws to dine. She learnt about this after watching a programme on Astro Wah Lai Toi.  Hmm ... I don't think we practise this custom over here in Malaysia.  Maybe they do it in China or Hong Kong.

LIVING UP TO HER NAME

In Chinese, Kim Yu Na's (金姸兒) surname means Gold and this Princess on Ice certainly has lived up to her name.  Hmm ... though she is wearing the very lucky blue, I don't think that the colour really mattered as the girl really has substance and besides I think that her luck cycle must be on a high.

"When the numbers 150.06 popped up on the scoreboard, her mouth dropped open in delight. It was a world record, which had broken her old record by a whopping 16.11 points. Though her longtime rival Mao Asada had yet to skate, Kim had all but clinched the gold medal. She had made herself untouchable".

BLACK DAY: APRIL 14

Besides learning about White Day, I also found out that there is a Black Day.  This day is for those singletons and is celebrated in South Korea.
Black Day (April 14) is a South Korean informal tradition for single people (a.k.a. Unit Solo/Solo Regiment, lee: 솔로부대) to get together and eat jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce as in the picture above), sometimes a white sauce is mixed for those who did not celebrate White Day.

The idea is that those who did not give or receive gifts on Valentine's Day (February 14) or White Day (March 14) can get together and eat jajangmyeon (자장면), white Korean noodles with black bean sauce (hence the name), to celebrate their singledom.

WHITE DAY (14 MARCH)

In the Taiwanese drama series, "Hanazakari no kimitachi e", there was this episode where a fan gave a box of chocolates to the character played by Wu Chun because it was Valentine's Day.  Initially I had thought that Valentine's day was on the 14th of February but I only found out after reading an article on a new series by Ella (who played the female lead in the drama with Wu Chun) that she and her new leading man, Jerry Yan, would be having some promotional activity on a Valentine's day which falls on March 14th. This was referred to as White Valentine's Day. It was then that I looked up on this particular day.  Below I am sharing with you what I found out:
WHITE DAY
White Day is a holiday celebrated on March 14, one month after Valentine's Day. In Japan this day is a widespread holiday, much like Valentine's Day. It is also observed in South Korea and Taiwan.
In Japan
In Japan, Valentine's Day is observed by females who present chocolate gifts (either store-bought or handmade), usually to a male, as an expression of love. The handmade chocolate is usually preferred by the receiver, because it is a sign that the receiving male is the girl's "only one". On White Day, the converse happens: males who received a honmei-choco (本命チョコ?, "chocolate of love") or giri-choco (義理チョコ?, "courtesy chocolate") on Valentine's Day are expected to return the favor by giving gifts, usually more expensive. Traditionally, popular White Day gifts are cookies, jewellery, white chocolate, white lingerie and marshmallows. Sometimes the term sanbai gaeshi (三倍返し?, literally, "thrice the return") is used to describe the generally recited rule that the return gift should be two to three times the cost of the Valentine's gift.

BEAUTIFUL COUPLE

I watched a Malay drama about the supernatural on television tonight.  I would not have stopped blogging to watch the show if it was not for the fact that Ramona's mum sent me a text message to say that her boyfriend is acting in it.  I think the above picture of him with Mona was taken during the shooting as he looked a sight in it as his character was being haunted.
I got this photo from Ramona's Facebook.  My girl still looks gorgeous with minimal make-up on.
Mona is of Pakistani, German, Malay and Siamese parentage.  I wonder if her boyfriend, Sakhee, is of mixed parentage as well because he does have very fine features.
Here is the newspaper article about the celebrity couple.  Well, Sakhee has announced to the world that he is in a relationship with Ramona and that speaks volumes for him.  He does not hide the fact that they are dating and is very honest and open about it.  Of course, he has met the parents and has stated his intentions.  So far, this young man seems to be potential husband material.  Anyway, both of them are still studying and hopefully they complete their studies before I get an invitation card from them.
Hopefully, Ramona will introduce him to me one of these days.  I am sure that I will be swooning over this good looking young man as well.  Hee! Hee!

GODDESS ON ICE

I don't know much about figure skating but one thing I do know is that a young South Korean lass by the name of Kim Yu Na is expected to be crowned queen of her sports for the winter Olympics in Canada.  Before the winter games, this willowy 19-year old has already won a lot of accolades in figure skating and is already a major celebrity and cultural icon in her country.  In a few hours time, we would know whether she will be the first South Korean to win gold in this discipline.
I have seen videos of her in action, and indeed Yu Na seems to own the skating rink with her gracefulness, elegance as well as technical precision.  Well, we will know soon if she manages to blow her competition away to take on the mantle of Goddess on Ice.

EARLY BIRTHDAY TREAT

My friend, Kamariah's birthday falls on 28th February which is this Sunday.  I had initially wanted to give her a birthday treat at a fast food restaurant but she ended up picking up the tab for the meal.
Anyway, here is wishing her a year full of happiness, harmonious relationships, good health, success and lots of love.

BLUE BATIK

In Malaysia, the civil servants are required to wear clothings made from Malaysian Batik on Thursday so that they can acquire a national identity and promote the traditional fabric.  The sartorial rule to wear batik on Thursday is to give Malaysian batik a boost by getting civil servants to wear it more often.

Like all Malaysian civil servants, my colleagues and I are wearing colourful batik attires this Thursday. Today I am wearing a lovely blue batik baju kebaya.  For your information, every year the Teacher and Staff Club would choose a particular batik material of the same colour and all the members would buy the cloth and make garments out of them.  The blue one that I am wearing was the batik for 2007 which happens to be my favourite.  Since wearing blue would help to offset the deficit in water for 2010, I will make sure that I wear this outfit more often.  Ahem! Don't you agree I look good in it?

FIX-IT

Here is an excerpt from an article that says that if we fix broken things in our homes, we can fix our lives.  Personally, I do not think that it would be that easy but I guess by setting things right, we would somehow psychologically start to feel less stressed and have a clearer mind which in turn would make us have a better outlook.

Fix Broken Things

by
Carol M. Olmstead

BellaOnline's Feng Shui Editor

Feng Shui is about rearranging your surroundings to set the intention to attract good things into your life, like more money, a better love life, or greater family harmony. And while you are waiting for these big intentions to come flowing through your front door, it’s important that you pay attention to the small things that contribute to a feeling of abundance and prosperity. When you ignore things that are broken you set an intention of neglect. However when you fix broken things, you set an intention to attract abundance.

Are you surrounded by things that are broken, ripped, torn, stained, dirty, in disrepair, or not working? These negative conditions represent a disregard for your home and, consequently, for yourself. Conditions like cracks, holes, chipped paint, peeling wallpaper, or dead plants represent negative forces in your life since they block the flow of positive energy around you. Leaks, especially, can result in a drain on your finances, since in Feng Shui water represents abundance.

When you fix everything that is broken or not working in your home, you can fix what is broken in your life.

I recommend you go through every room in your house to identify things that are leaking, clogged, burned out, broken, or stuck. Repair what you can immediately, and schedule dates to hire help to fix everything else.

Here are five quick fixes you can make where you will see an immediate, positive impact on your well-being:

1. If you have a broken mirror in your home, replace it, since it keeps you from seeing things clearly.

2. If a light bulb is burned out, change it, since it keeps you in the dark about your future.

3. If your kitchen faucet is leaking, fix it or call the plumber, since you are losing wealth and abundance.

4. If you have a dirty or faded front door, clean or repaint it, since a dirty door repels wealth but a clean door attracts prosperity.

5. If your windows are dirty, clean them, since clean windows represent a clear view of the opportunities coming your way.

Fix broken things in your home and you will remove whatever is blocking positive energy from entering your life.

REPLACE, REPAIR OR REMOVE

I read in an Internet article that if anything in your house is broken or not working, there are three alternatives.  You can Replace, Repair, or Remove the item as soon as possible.

It is not good to be surrounded by things that are broken, ripped, torn, stained, dirty, in disrepair, or not working.  These negative conditions represent a disregard for your home or workplace and also you and your family. Cracks, holes, chipped paint, peeling wallpaper, or dead plants represent negative forces in your life since they block the flow of positive energy around you. Leaks, especially, can result in a drain on your finances, since in Feng Shui water represents abundance.

This is the condition of the dustpan in the library when I took it out from the storeroom.  I told my library assistant to throw it away and I would be buying a new one.  A new one costs less than RM5.00.

FAMOUS SEDUCTRESS: PAN JIN LIAN 潘金莲

Water Margin is a famous classical novel from Chinese literature.  In this story, there is an adulterous by the name of  Pan Jinlian.  There have been quite a number of TV dramas and movies featuring this notorious seductress who is also known as the Taoist goddess of fornication and prostitution. Pan Jin Lian became the patroness of prostitutes, who frequently make obeisance to her as they enter their places of business.
The actress chosen to play the part is mainland Chinese actress, Bobo Gan Tingting (pictured above).  The twenty-four year old actress said she had read the book and other relevant stories for more than 30 times to understand the character.

Wu Song is famous for killing a fierce man-eating tiger at Yanggu county with his bare hands. It is at this place that he meets his elder brother Wu Dalang, who has moved there recently. Wu Dalang brings his brother home and introduces him to his wife Pan Jinlian. Wu Song learns that they had moved to Yanggu to avoid gossip. In their former residence,  the neighbours would often remark their being together as "a rose placed on a pile of cow dung" (一朵鮮花插在牛糞上) asWu Dalang is short and ugly so he is the "cow dung" to his wifes's "rose". Pan is instantly attracted to her handsome and heroic brother-in-law and attempts to seduce him but she is rejected by him. To avoid her adulterous advances, he accepts an assignment from to transport gold to another county. After completing his assignment, he is shocked to see that his brother had died, apparently from illness.

Wu Song was suspicious and carried out his investigations.  He found that Pan had entered an extra-maritial affair with a rich and lustful merchant by the name of Ximen Qing and murdered her hawker husband Wu Dalang and later became the fifth mistress of Ximen Qing. The nymphomaniac Pan had also fed Ximen Qing with aphrodisiacs which led to his demise.  Another version of the story has Wu Song forcing a confession out of Pan Jin Lian and then decapitating her first and then kills Ximen Qing in a fight.

What an interesting character!  I wonder if she was a figment of the author's imagination or if he had based her on a real-life adulterous.

TAKE IT WITH A PINCH OF SALT

I have been reading a lot of astrological forecasts by various feng shui masters from the end of last year until now.  Sometimes, I find that there is quite a big difference in the forecasts for some animal signs.  My advice is don't be too overly worked up if the prediction for your animal sign is not good.  There are 12 animal signs in the Chinese Zodiac and there are billions of people on this earth.  Don't tell me that all those who were born in a certain year would have ill health, bad luck, accidents and what nots and others who were born in another year would have all things good.  Nah!  The world just doesn't work that way. One needs to take into account many other things like for example ones BaZi, the Feng Shui of their residence, the Feng Shui of their ancestors' burial place, Face Reading and a whole gamut of other factors.

However, it is fun and interesting to see what each Feng Shui master or academy has to say.  However, you need to take the predictions with a pinch of salt, that means you should not entirely believe something.   The best thing to do is to view it with a healthy degree of skepticism.

KIM HYUN JOONG SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Just as I had blogged about a philantropist from Ipoh who has set up a scholarship funds for students in my country, I read that the fans of South Korean entertainer, Kim Hyun Joong has set up a scholarship fund in his name in order to show their love and support for their idol and as a special present for him. This group of people is from Kim Hyun Joong's fan club 'Kim Hyun Joong Perfect'. Kim Hyun Joong has once told his fans to 'please live life like a flower'. By that I think he meant for them to give joy to others as a flower does.  I guessed that was what inspired his fan club members to bring happiness into the life of the less fortunate.  Last April, his fan club members donated to 'Korea Leukaemia Children Foundation'

At the beginning of this year, his fan club members started a 'Kim Hyun Joong Love Sharing Activity' to raise scholarship funds and up till the time the article was written they had collected more than US$205,690. The fans have allocated US$119,886 from the total collected as 'Kim Hyun Joong Scholarship' and have tasked the Beautiful Foundation Corporation to set up and manage Kim HyunJoong's scholarship as 'University Entrance Fee Scholarship'. This type of scholarship is the first of its kind set up by a celebrity fan club.  The remaining US$85,694 will be used to help local community underprivileged children and teenagers.

Idols have great influence on their fans who are most often youngsters who are really impressionable.  They have a responsibility to help inspire their fans to do wholesome activities like what Kim Hyun Joong has done.
