SURVIVING 70 YEARS WITHOUT FOOD OR WATER?

The man in the above pictures is an 83-year-old Indian Yogi who claims that he had been surviving for 70 years without food or water.  In a bid to find out his secret, Long-haired Prahlad Jani has been put in solitary confinement in hospital where 30 medics are maintaining a constant watch over him.

The probe began on April 22 and is due to last up to 20 days.

Jani, who claims to have been blessed by a goddess when he was eight, has not eaten or drunk anything - and has not been to the toilet.

GETTING THE RECOGNITION YOU DESERVE

- Feng Shui Tips for Fame

by Katryn Weber

Getting ahead in any area of life requires that you get plenty of attention. Fortunately, feng shui offers key steps that can help you gain more notice to help you get the recognition you deserve.

If you're interested in progressing in life, it's important to make feng shui adjustments to important areas such as the north (career/opportunities) and northwest (helpful people/mentors) sectors. These two sectors are critical for helping you rise in prominence.

Enhancing the north sector (of your living room, your house, and in your office or business) helps opportunities to come your way. This is done by adding water elements to this sector. As always, when I talk about a sector, I am talking about one of the 9 palaces of the lo shu square (the feng shui roadmap that I offer free to all my subscribers). And, as always, in addition to the nine areas of your home, you'll also want to divide your living room or office into 9 palaces and enhance each one accordingly.

But it's not all about the north.

No, the saying goes that it's not what you know, but who you know, which explains why you need mentors and helpful people who can advise you and give you the proper introductions to help you move ahead in life and in business.

It's interesting how different the Western and Eastern views about mentors are. In Eastern beliefs, you always want to have someone in a prominent position to help you in your endeavors, and these influential people often seek out and want protégés to whom they can pass along their knowledge and to assist them.

In Western, and more so, American, opinions, this assistance is seen as a weakness. Americans often want to "blaze their own trails" and build their careers and business all on their own so they can savor the pride of doing it on their own.

However, in today's corporate environment, and in an increasingly more competitive world, everyone needs a benefactor or helpful guide. But, to gain this type of relationship, you have to be able to be seen by someone in the position to help you. This is where the south sector comes in.

The south is the direction that is most closely associated with recognition and fame.

To have a well-designed and helpful south sector, certain elements must be in harmony. If not, you will struggle to gain recognition - and fame will certainly be elusive.

With a poor south sector, you will be left feeling like you are chest-deep in the ocean and waving your arms wildly trying to get someone to notice you. Not a good situation if you are trying to get a book published, or to come to the attention of superiors, get a new job, if you are an actor, or even a single person trying to catch the eye of an admirer.

That's why the south sector is so important! Where is the south sector? The south, of course. Using a compass, you'll want to locate the south corner of your home and office and enhance this area appropriately. Use the tips below to help you boost your south sector and get the attention and recognition you crave -- and deserve!

1. Lights, camera, action.

Light up the south wall of your living room by painting this wall red, adding lights or candles to this area. Place uplights into the bottoms of planters to shine light up into plants. Be sure to make this area bright and well-lit.

2. Call attention to yourself.

If you have a university degree, letters of commendation, published articles, trophies, or any kind of recognition whatsoever, place these on the south wall of your living room, office, or waiting area in a business.

3. Use the power of 9.

The number nine is the number associated with the south, so if you have pictures taken with famous people or other prestigious items to decorate with, put them into groups of nine on the south wall. Better still, put them all into red frames for extra recognition energy!

4. Complement the south.

The south is the direction of fire, so use complementary elements here. Don't want to paint your south wall red? Then try green or brown shades instead. These are associated with wood and the wood element feeds the fire element.

5. Plant some recognition.

In the south portion of your yard or garden, plant shrubs that have red flowers and place lights out in this area of the garden. Or, plant a beautiful tree that turns red in the fall. Plants indoors are also great additions to the south part of the house (provided it is not a bedroom).

6. Bring on the sun.

If you have a picture of a sunrise, or figure of the sun, or anything with the sun or sunlight in it, put it in the south sector of your living room or home. This will "shine" on you and build your reputation. Even sunflowers are auspicious here!

7. The bird is the word.

Use birds in the south to bring good news and recognition to you. If you can find an image of the Chinese phoenix, place this there. If not, birds such as roosters, parrots, or peacocks are all acceptable substitutes. Even peacock feathers are good here. Try using 9 peacock feathers in a wooden vase to stimulate the south energy.

8. Get to the point.

The south is enhanced by anything that is pointed. Therefore, triangles, arrows, or anything that is pointed represents the tip of a flame, and therefore, fire energy. If you have pyramids or triangles, place these (in groups of 9 would be best!) in the south.

9. Chime in.

Ever wonder about the best place to hang bamboo windchimes? This is the place! Being made of wood, these are complementary to the south and lift the chi of the south. Make sure they have more than 5-rods, though, as a 5-rod chime would press down the chi (energy) of the south. Six, seven, eight, or nine rod chimes lift the chi and stimulate the south energy.

SAYING FAREWELL TO A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE

1998
2007
29 April, 2010

My friend and colleague for 12 years, Ishak, received his transfer letter this morning.  He would be posted to another school as the school we teach in no longer offer the subject that he teaches, Physics.
I felt rather sad to lose a good friend and colleague.  Mind you, 12 years is not a short period of time.  Through the years, I have seen him growing, both older and bigger.  I am a person who would be easily happy or sad and this parting would no doubt make me melancholy tomorrow.  Thank goodness I will not be in school to see him clock out for the last time as I am accompanying the debating team for their competition in Ipoh.
The consolation is that he is teaching in the school just across the road and so there would still be times when we'd bump into each other.

FROM 7.30 A.M. UNTIL 5.45 P.M.

Ever wonder how a Media teacher spends her day in school?  Wonder no more.  Here is how I spent today. I had a class with the vocational students from 7.30 a.m. until 8.50 a.m.  As I had to come up with some notes for my debating team, I asked my boys to write me an essay. While they were going about writing the essay, I sourced for points for the motions, "Students should wear school uniforms to school" and "You can judge a man by his appearance".
My boys were angels today and they obediently did their work and gave me the time to get the extra information for the debate.
At around noon time, the teachers and I counted the entries for a contest we ran in conjunction with Resource Centre Week.
All the while, my debaters were busy preparing for their debate tomorrow.  They were with Kamariah and me in the library from 8.50 a.m. until 2.30 p.m.
I left school at 2.30 p.m. to go to the Video shop to buy a video for the screening of a movie.  This screening is one of the activities for the Resource Centre Week.
The screening for the movie was from 3.45 p.m. until 5.15 p.m.  By the time, my librarians and I packed up all the equipment and rearranged the chairs, it was already 5.30 p.m.  I finally left school at 5.45 p.m.
Now I have managed to squeeze some time in to do this blog.  Earlier I did the posts for the school blog.  After this I will go and buy dinner and then come back to prepare some notes for my debaters tomorrow.  That my dear visitors is a day in the life of Miss Cheah, the Media and resource centre teacher.

FENG SHUI BETWEEN THE EARS

-- The Mental Programming that Keeps You Broke
by Katryn Weber

Money is energy pure and simple.

This is one of the universal truths that is easy to dismiss because we have become programmed, whether through culture, family bias, or our own psychology, that money has "meaning" around it.

But the truth is that money is indiscriminate and moves, like electricity, independent of who flips the switch. Money doesn't care whose hand, wallet or bank account it lands in -- but people do.

Money also doesn't care if you're a righteous and moral person or if you're completely lacking in ethics and any scrap of integrity. That's how you can explain why some people get ahead financially who are simply awful people who would sell their mother for a buck.

Once we can get rid of the judgments and tapes we hold about money and become more comfortable, or at the very least, neutral, about money, then accumulating money becomes easier. And, even after you've used feng shui thoroughly in your home and business, it could be that the feng shui between your ears is holding you back.

An easy trap to fall into with money is the excuse trap.

When we overspend or are in a difficult situation, we justify and make excuses. Take full responsibility for your finances and earnings. That's easy to do and gets you out of the rut that keeps you trapped. How so?

Every time you make an excuse about money, you are laying the bricks in the wall of your financial entrapment. When you're accountable and confident about your actions, you magnetize yourself for money. More importantly, it creates a shift in your life.

But sometimes you need to get even deeper into your mindset to root out the beliefs about money that keep you financially trapped.

Below are some of the commonly held beliefs about money.

Ask yourself if any of these thoughts are holding you back. Print this list off and check all that apply. Write down any other ideas you have about money that are negative. Look at what you've written carefully and then decide whether these thoughts are helping you or hindering you.

__I'm not worthy of wealth

__My family isn't a "rich" family

__Money is not spiritual

__I'll probably just fail anyway

__But we can't afford nice things

__Rich people are greedy and dishonest

__If I'm successful, my friends will be jealous and stop liking me

__I'm no better than my parents, so I shouldn't make more than they did

__I might forget what's truly important and not like myself if I were rich

__Money is the root of all evil

__No one I know is wealthy

__Being wealthy is a dream

__Rich people invest their money, not average people

__I will never have enough money

__Wealthy people are liars

__No one in my family is rich

__Women can't be rich and be good mothers/nice women/good wives

__Money is hard to make

__I can't enjoy money

__Money is for saving, not enjoying

__If I live long enough, I might enjoy some of my money

__My family wouldn't like me if I were successful

__My spouse wouldn't support me if I became wealthy and successful

__I feel guilty having more than others

Now, what are you going to *choose* to believe?

You don't have to follow the old paradigm anymore.

Just admitting that you have these beliefs is helpful. But, if you find yourself resenting someone in a Mercedes (rich people aren't nice) or making negative statements about money (I guess I'm just like the other Smiths and can't save money), stop and correct yourself. Or, remain neutral (my favorite) and allow the thought to drift out of your head like a child's balloon sailing off into the sky.

Re-channel your negative thoughts and energy positively.

Start blessing your bills, your home, your savings account and anything related to money. If you can't be positive about money, then at least be neutral about it, especially when you pay bills. You'll begin to shift your personal energy -- and if you combine this with making changes around your house -- you'll give yourself extra oomph. By moving both at the same time, you will effectively compound the energy and create more monetary momentum.

Make it OK to want and expect wealth.

It's alright if you have more to spend because you can do more with your money. Let's look at the positives of having more money:

--You can support your favorite charities or causes

--You can start a foundation or endowment for animals, scholarships, the environment

--You can give more money away

--You can improve your health

--You can send money to political parties that support your beliefs

--You can save for the future

--You can help your family and friends

WHAT IS A CHINESE HOUR?

By Feng Shui Master Henry Fong

“I was born on Hai hour. Does that mean I am harmful to others”, a friend asked.

My first thought was why would someone born on ‘Hai’ hour, be harmful to others. Then it dawn upon me that the word ‘Hai’ sounds a lot, in Chinese, like harm. He was visibly relieved after I assured him that his birth time has no direct harmful effect on his friends and family!

But what is ‘Hai’ hour? The ancient Chinese measure time in two hour blocks. ‘Hai’ is the name given to the two hour block between 9 PM and 11 PM.

There are twelve (12) two hour blocks in a day. The first two hour block is between 11 PM and 1 AM. This Chinese hour is called ‘Zi’ hour. This is followed by ‘Chou’ hour which is the time between 1 AM and 3 AM and goes on and finally ending at ‘Hai’ hour. Each of these Chinese hours is assigned an animal sign from the 12 animal zodiacs. For example ‘Zi’ is assigned the Rat. If you are born at say 12.05 AM, then your birth time is ‘Zi’ or the Rat hour.

Please refer below to the 12 Chinese hour and associated animal sign below.

The birth hour is very important in Chinese astrology such as Ba Zi and Zi Wei Dou Shu as they are required to complete the birth chart or the ‘picture’.

What if you are born in between two Chinese hour e.g. at 3 PM? Should you use the Wei hour (1 PM to 3 PM) or Shen hour (3 PM to 5 PM)? Recording of birth time is usually done by the attending doctor and is a best an approximate. Usually he writes down the time after the delivery which can be many minutes after the time that the baby takes the first breathe (more if there are complications).

For the purpose of astrology, it is crucial to figure out the right time. It is also necessary to adjust for any daylight savings adjustments that may have occurred at the time of birth. Otherwise the entire reading is wrong.

This is why determining the correct birth time is the first step to a successful Chinese astrology reading. We do this by asking the person some pertinent questions to see which chart ‘fits’.

So now you know when someone says she was born on the horse hour, it means ‘Wu’ time between 11 AM and 1 PM!

TEACHER AND STUDENT

The young man on my right is Hanafiah, a teacher in my school.  I taught him when he was studying in my school from 2000 to 2001.  Now he has graduated from university and is he himself a teacher.
Aiyoh!  I am getting old.  Look at how grown up my former student is.

AS LONG AS THEY ARE HAPPY ...

The people above saw it fit to tattoo or pierce their skins in order to attain a certain type of look that they deem beautiful.  Some even added things under their skin to create horns.  To us, they might look weird but to them they feel very happy because in their minds they are beautiful.  Well, it is their own mugs!  As long as they are happy, who are we to say anything.  Right?

BLUE MUSHROOMS

I actually did not know that there really exist mushrooms that are blue in colour until I visited one blog yesterday.  The blogger who is visiting Tasmania at the moment posted a picture of the Blue Mushrooms and that got me interested.
The Scientific name for it is Mycena interrupta.  The blue mushroom is commonly known as the Pixies' Parasol.   It  can be found in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Chile.

GEARING UP FOR FOOTBALL FEVER

Here is what my librarians and I have been working on since last week.  The theme of the exhibition is FIFA World Cup 2010. What you see is the centrepiece of the exhibition.
This has taken up a lot of my time but it is worth it.  I will be adding to it and will keep it until the end of the World Cup.  Believe me, football fever will start hitting a lot of people on this globe come June this year.

STUCK ON YOU

Taiwanese pop princess Rainee Yang invited Jerry Yan to be her special guest at her first ever concert at the Taipei Arena recently.  I remember that both of them appeared together in the hit drama, "Meteor Garden" many, many years ago.  Rainee was the best friend of the female lead, Barbie Hsu.  I guess that was the start of her friendship with Jerry.
Anyway during the concert, the two of them were cosying up to one another and ended up hugging each but unexpectedly they became inseparable. Now this was not in the script.  It seemed that the accessories on her blouse got caught to Jerry's clothes. The gentleman did not want to do the disentangling for fear of accidentally touching her chest.  Rainie had the presence of mind to joke about the situation by saying "I'm scared you might not be able to find it (my chest)!" In the end, the stylist came onto the  stage and successfully separated the two.

Now this is what can be labelled as "Stuck on You".

A LESSON LEARNT

I had to attend a few sessions of In-house training in school on Saturday but because of miscommunication, our first speaker received a written message that his talk was at 9.00 a.m. instead of 8.30 a.m. Actually he reached the school at 8.30 a.m. and parked his car near the hall. He reached the school office at 8.40 a.m. to find Kamariah waiting for him and telling him that he was late and that the second speaker had taken over his slot.

In the above picture, Kamariah is talking with a personnel from the Fire Prevention Centre to see if they could reschedule his session with another school in Sitiawan so that our speaker could give his talk at 10.30 a.m. Thankfully they managed to postpone the session with the other school and our guest speaker would be giving his talk to us.

Actually I already had the preconceived idea that this Chinese guy whose clothing resembles that of my librarians might be presenting a not very interesting session and that I would be fighting off sleepiness just to get through the two hour-slot. When he spoke with Kamariah and me, I noticed that he spoke with thick Chinese accented English and Bahasa Melayu.

Oh! Oh! I had commented to both Kamariah and the chief clerk that he would be a very monotonous speaker and also people might have problems understanding him. Why on earth did the Fire Prevention Centre find such a lecturer to educate people about such an important safety issue?
Ladies and gentlemen, the moment the speaker from the Fire Prevention Centre, Mr Kent Ng took over the microphone from the master of ceremony, he worked his magic. Believe me, he was good. Actually, he managed to convey the danger, the sadness and the frustration of what fire can do to us and ways to prevent it. According to him, the time given for his slot is actually not enough as there is so much more he wanted to share with everyone. From the second he started to speak until the end of his presentation, he had everyone in stitches and sometimes what he showed or narrated had people cringing their faces out of horror or fear. Contrary to what I had anticipated, no one was bored nor sleepy. Kent managed to get the attention of all present in the room.

My dear readers, I hang my head in shame for prejudging Kent. He turned out to be a very fine speaker. Time and again, I keep telling my students, never judge a book by its cover and I have committed the mistake today. Now I know that the Fire Prevention Centre knew what it was doing.

LOOK ONLY, NO EATING ...

Yesterday morning, there was In-house training for the teachers and staff of my school.  In the above picture, you see me checking out the food that would be served to the guest speakers whom we have invited to give talks.
The food looks so yummy and delicious.  Alas!  Can see but cannot eat.
The people who were privileged to enjoy the sumptious fare prepared by the canteen operator. The teachers and staff had their meals served to them at the canteen.
