GUARDIAN OF GOOD FORTUNE

I am sure those who know Malay know that Singapore or Singapura means lion city. Well, it was thus named because the man who first set foot there said he saw a lion. Then the Tourism Board of Singapore came up with the Merlion (鱼尾狮) which is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The Merlion is regarded as a symbol of welcome and also benevolent guardian of the good fortune of this island nation.
You can see me posing with the original Merlion statue at Merlion Park that fronts Marina Bay. The sculpture was aligned to face the east — the most auspicious feng shui position recommended by the masters.
