BOXING DAY: A DAY FOR CHARITY

When I was young, my parents told me that they were married on Boxing Day and that is why I know that it falls on December 26. I am quite sure that many people in Malaysia would not know the significance of this day. Some may be thinking that it is a day for the sport of boxing or some might also think that it has something to do with boxes of gifts. Actually, Boxing Day is an English holiday and all about giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. This day dates back to past centuries when it was the custom for the wealthy to give gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class.

In this modern day and age, many businesses, organizations, and families donate their time, services, and money to aid Food Banks and provide gifts for the poor, or they may choose to help an individual family that is in need on Boxing Day. In some countries, it is treated as a "shopping holiday" associated with post Christmas sales.

Hmmm ... maybe, I'll think of some charity work to do on this day. But most importantly, I'll take my mum out for a treat to celebrate her anniversary.
