These pictures of mediums in a trance during the second day of the Nine Emperor God Festival were taken by me this evening. You can see that they have pipes and skewers pierced through their cheeks. First timers would be terrified during the piercing ceremony but for those who witness it yearly, it is normal. Nothing will happen to the men. They do it yearly and the wounds heal within a few days or even hours. There will be no scars. Their lives will not be threatened as the deities will protect them. Actually this ritual helps to cleanse them.
Personally I feel engergised and invigorated when I attend such events. The presence of the deities will give a huge dose of Chi boost for those present. Yeah, if there are evil spirits lurking near you or a person is possessed. Then the mediums will chase them away.
